PNOY Ethics & Leadership Trait from 2011 SONA

In Ethics, Politics & Governance on July 29, 2011 at 1:12 am

Philippine president Noynoy Aquino was unethical and unbecoming of a leader during his 2011 state of the nation address or SONA. PNOY was creating a wrong image of his achievements to the Filipinos. PNOY claimed and bragged about two controversial achievements. First is the attained accuracy in the forecasting ability country’s weather bureau, the Philippine Geophysical and Astronomical Administration or PAGASA. The second is the discovery of a PHP1 billion coffee bill of Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation or PAGCOR.

The next day after PNOY’s SONA his avid supporter Albay governor Joey Salceda came crying on national media on how PAGASA bungled the typhoon Juaning forecast that caught his province flat footed and left dead several of his folks. Some of the dead were known and close to Salceda. The next day his mother was also a victim. Then came the rebuttal of the former PAGCOR chairman Efraim Genuino that accepted correct the PHP1 billion coffee bill but described the mathematical analysis done on it as wrong. Genuino claimed that whole coffee consumption covers nearly 10 years from 2001 to 2010 of his chairmanship. It was provided by a private concessionaire who owns the coffee shop brand Figaro.

To use flimsy and feeble claim during his SONA is out rightly unethical for PNOY. His claims were not factual and truthful. Indeed PAGASA may have increased their accuracy and that the PAGCOR coffee bill was overpriced but the manner and context of its announcement was improper. It created a spectacular and great image of PNOY’s achievement in the minds of plain folks when in fact it is not. The PAGASA attained accuracy still has a margin of error to contend with. Given climate change this amounts to nothing but to constantly pray the Hail Mary. The PAGCOR coffee deal has a legitimate private coffee firm involved that owns a reputable coffee brand that was recklessly tarnished. The PNOY Gestapo still has to prove where the wrong between PAGCOR and its concessionaire Figaro was committed. Figaro is a known brand and its owner much like all others has a claim to respect or at the very least due process. The correct and prudent approach for PNOY who is a leader per se is to constantly guard against any wrong and half truths that can damage his sense of fairness and justice.  The obvious wrong is his obsessive pursuit to persecute his predecessor, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. He still has to exhibit leadership which is all about the pursuit of a decent state in the future for the Filipinos. PNOY’s obsession of the past is like a baby crying over spilled milk. He is so tightly tied to the past to near stagnation and a possible decay of his person. His weakness is now all too obvious to all.

The prescription for PNOY is he should learn from the rule of St. Benedict of Nursia, who lived in the 5th and 6th century, the founder of Christian monasticism, and was held as the principal patron of Europe. His rule is still very relevant until this modern age. The issue raised by this essay on PNOY’s behavior relates to the following points of the rule of St. Benedict: Keep constant guard over the actions of your life. Do not follow the prompting of anger. Do not be a detractor.  Do not bear hatred against anybody. Do not foster deceit in your heart. Love your enemies. Make peace with your adversary before the setting of the sun.

Only with a kind heart can one lead correctly.
